What is PAW?

PAW is a framework for diagnosing and overcoming dog behavior problems, based on Ryan Holiday‘s book The Obstacle is the Way. PAW has become an indispensable tool for me and I thought it might be useful for others.

To effectively work with clients on their dog’s behavior problems, you need more than training techniques and methods. Every client, dog, and situation is different, with unique variables that need to be accounted for. Using the three elements of PAW, you can more easily create training plans that account for these variables, which include, but are not limited to:

  • genetics
  • past history
  • home environment
  • other household pets
  • owner lifestyle
  • likelihood of compliance from owner
  • owner finances

PAW is not a dog training technique. You probably already have those or can learn elsewhere. PAW is simply a framework for getting a complete picture of a dog behavior problem. Whether you are a complete dog behavior novice or a grizzled veteran, PAW can help you.

I plan to use this website to post anything PAW related. It is an extremely flexible tool that I can see being helpful in a number of contexts. I suggest trying PAW for a week or two. See how it works for you. Then come back and share your experience here!
